About the Role

As Application Engineer, you'll work alongside the Regional Sales/Applications Engineer to further the technical relationship with the customer once a utility-scale PV project reaches the advanced sales stage (roughly 90% probability of closing) and carry it through commissioning and operation. You'll be the person the customer reaches out to with technical questions, the one who makes sure their inverter parameter settings are right before energization, and the bridge between our customers and our internal engineering, service, and modeling teams.

This is a great role for an engineer who enjoys working directly with customers, wants to build deep product expertise in utility-scale inverters, and takes pride in getting the details right.

What You'll Do

Support customers from late-stage sales through commissioning

  • Act as the primary technical contact for project-specific questions once the opportunity reaches the advanced stage, taking a structured handover from the Application Engineer
  • Respond to customer requests for technical clarifications, documentation, and project-specific information
  • Field questions on inverter configuration, operation, and site-specific requirements

Own inverter parameter settings

  • Work with customers to finalize project-specific parameter settings, and build a working understanding of how each parameter affects inverter behavior and performance
  • Maintain and update parameter-setting documents, and create the parameter files used to configure inverters in the field
  • Verify that customer-approved settings are correctly documented and signed off before commissioning
  • Support parameter-related discussions during project execution and commissioning

Deliver accurate project documentation

  • Prepare project-specific technical documentation based on the finalized inverter option codes
  • Review documents for accuracy and completeness before they go to customers or internal teams
  • Keep clean records of configurations, parameter settings, option codes, and customer approvals

Coordinate across teams

  • Partner with Project Managers to provide timely technical input throughout the project lifecycle
  • Work with our Service and Modeling teams in India to deepen your knowledge of inverter operation, commissioning requirements, and parameter behavior
  • Pull in product and engineering subject-matter experts when issues go beyond project scope, and escalate early when needed

Build and share knowledge

  • Develop strong product expertise in SMA's utility-scale inverters, communication systems, option codes, and parameter settings
  • Capture lessons learned from project issues and feed them back into templates, documents, and processes
  • Help standardize parameter-setting documents and project support workflows so every project gets easier than the last

What Success Looks Like

  • Customers get consistent, responsive technical support from late-stage sales through commissioning — no dropped handoffs
  • Parameter settings and configurations are reviewed, approved, and documented correctly the first time
  • Project documentation goes out accurate and on schedule
  • Application Engineers are freed up to focus on new projects, new customers, and new business

What We're Looking For

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or power systems.
  • Experience with utility-scale PV, power conversion systems, or inverter-based resources preferred — but we'll consider strong candidates earlier in their careers who show the right technical foundation
  • Working knowledge of PV inverter operation, controls, communication systems, and parameter settings
  • Comfort reading technical specifications, electrical drawings, and project documentation
  • Clear written and verbal communication — you can explain technical details to customers without jargon and without losing precision
  • Strong organizational skills; you'll juggle multiple projects with different timelines and keep commitments on all of them
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with international, cross-functional teams across time zones
  • Genuine curiosity about how inverters behave and a willingness to keep learning
